Reported October 30, 2026: The survey, done by the mental health advocacy group JED Foundation, found that 90% of the 5,500 9-to-17-year-olds in schools across the country have used an AI chatbot. Nearly two-thirds use it both for schoolwork and as companions, or when they are stressed, lonely, anxious or overwhelmed.
WinstonNPR reports on a survey by the JED Foundation, a mental health advocacy group. The survey covered five thousand five hundred children aged nine to seventeen in schools across the country.
AsherThe JED Foundation survey found ninety percent of those surveyed have used an AI chatbot. Does the survey also describe what young people use chatbots for?
WinstonYes. The survey reports nearly two-thirds use chatbots both for schoolwork and as companions, or when they are stressed, lonely, anxious or overwhelmed.
AsherWhat catches my attention is that combination: schoolwork, companionship, and use during difficult feelings. That describes what chatbots are used for—not just how many have used one.
