FORTRESS America is a Pentagon initiative to help U.S. military bases keep operating when outside power, supplies or communications are disrupted. Its plans cover independent energy, stronger domestic supply chains, better-protected installations, reserves of critical supplies, and operations when satellite services or navigation are impaired.
The reported 90-day figure describes a resilience goal, not a countdown to a predicted emergency. Officials have discussed 30-, 60- or 90-day power goals depending on the location, alongside a 90-day stockpile of critical supplies. They are prioritizing projects rather than announcing one completion deadline for every base. A stated goal does not establish that every installation is ready.
Household preparedness is a separate question. CDC recommends at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days, and trying for two weeks if possible. For two people, that is six gallons for three days or 28 for two weeks; pets, heat and individual needs can increase the amount. Check what you already have, make a household plan and build supplies steadily. This initiative is not a reason to panic or panic-buy.
WinstonWhen I heard about FORTRESS America and 90 days without outside support, my first question was: ninety days until what?
AsherIt's how long military bases would aim to keep operating through a disruption. The plan addresses dependence on outside power and supplies. It doesn't announce a disaster date.
WinstonThe published figures vary for power and supplies. And a target doesn't mean every base is ready.
AsherI'd also want officials to explain how this connects to emergency plans for the communities outside the fence.
WinstonIf your wife bought a bunch of water after hearing this, you might be asking how much you actually need.
AsherShe has a more immediate question: are you helping unload it?
WinstonHere's a useful starting point. CDC recommends at least one gallon per person daily for three days. Try for two weeks if possible.
AsherFor two people, that's six gallons for three days, or 28 for two weeks. Allow more for pets, hot weather and other additional needs.
WinstonStart with what you have, count how many days it covers, and fill the gaps for your household.
AsherThat's general household guidance. FORTRESS isn't an instruction for families to buy 90 days of supplies.
WinstonI'd also check food, medications, lights, a radio, backup charging and a manual can opener.
WinstonIt's good to be ready. But this announcement isn't a reason to panic or rush out and buy everything at once. A little planning goes a long way.
